The off-season has become much more quiet with the Winter Meetings completed long ago and most of the big name free agents signed to long term contracts. Once again I’m going to stray away from the normal criteria for my Blue Jay of the Week and straight-up give it to one of my favourite Jays.
This weeks Blue Jay of the Week is…. Brett Lawrie! (@blawrie13)
As soon as Brett Lawrie was acquired on Dec.6, 2010 the anticipation for when he would make his big league debut was sky high. Lawrie did not disappoint as the 21 year old stepped into a big league batters box for his first official at-bat on Aug.5, 2011.
The kid exploded onto the scene with extra-base hits, consistent D at the hot corner and even a walk-off home run vs. the Boston Red Sox. It didn’t take much for him to win over fans as many were already behind him simply because he is Canadian born.
What I really love about him is his hustle and the passion he displays for the game. If I had to pick a Hall of Fame player to compare Brett Lawrie to, it would be Pete Rose. I have only seen highlights of Charlie Hustle but Lawrie has characteristics and a style similar to the all-time hit king.
Lawrie finished 2010 with 9 home runs and 25 rbi in 150 at-bats while showing speed on the base paths. It’s unknown exactly where he fits in the Blue Jays batting order, should he hit second so he can use his keen eye and .293 batting avg. to get on base for Jose Bautista or maybe the fifth spot which was once owned by the sweet swing of John Olerud?
I think he belongs at the top of a Major League line-up and I’m sure that Jose Bautista would enjoy hitting behind him for the rest of his career. Big things are expected in 2012 from Brett Lawrie and I really hope AA can sign him to a long term contract extension before Spring Training begins. Brett Lawrie belongs in a Blue Jays uniform and that is why he is this weeks Blue Jay of the Week!
What do you think about my Blue Jay of the Week?
