I thought I would switch it up this week and profile a new player on the Blue Jays roster. With so many more weeks until Spring Training and the regular season begin, I’m going to step away from the usual Blue Jay of the Week criteria.
This weeks Blue Jay of the Week is…. Sergio Santos!
Sergio Santos is the expected to be the new closer in the bullpen for years to come which is very exciting for fans across Canada.
He was once a shortstop in the Blue Jays system and even balked at the idea of switching positions and becoming a pitcher. Things changed when he was in the Chicago White Sox organisation and he made the switch becoming a major league pitcher with less than 60 innings of experience in the minors.
Sergio earned his first career victory by pitching two shutout innings against the Detroit Tigers on August 5, 2010. It is yet to be seen what the future will hold for this 28 year old but with his high 90′s mph fastball and nasty slider he expected to record many saves for the Blue Jays. Lets hope he is able to record his first save on Opening Day of the 2012 season.
Alex Anthopoulos gave up a promising young prospect in Néstor Molina but as we say at BIB headquarters – #InAAweTrust – the twitter world was abuzz with the arrival of Sergio Santos and we fully expect the entire baseball world will be when this kid takes the hill in blue and white.
The thought of having a successful and reliable closer is enough to make Sergio Santos this weeks Blue Jay of the Week!
