Since John Gibbons recently named DeMarlo Hale his bench coach many fans have speculated who could fill out the rest of his staff. Most of that speculation can end as Gibbons added four more coaches earlier today. It seems that Bruce Walton and Don Wakamatsu are the odd men out from John Farrell’s staff as neither coaches were offered contracts.
3rd base coach
Luis Rivera – Previously a non-uniformed assistant coach Rivera has spent the past two seasons working with players pre-game before being an in-game scout. Formerly the AA manager in New Hampshire, Rivera is well respected within the organization and is a favourite among the latin ballplayers. He has previous experience coaching with the Cleveland Indians as well as managing in their organization.
1st base coach
Dwayne Murphy – Murph makes the shift back to 1st base coach, a postion he held during the ’08 and ’09 seasons. The former hitting coach will handle the outfield defensive responsibilities as well as helping out newcomer Chad Mottola, if need be.
Chad Mottola – After spending three seasons with the Las Vegas 51′s at the AAA level Mottola is finally getting the opportunity to join the Major League staff. Long rumoured to be the in the running to join the staff as an assistant to former hitting coach Dwayne Murphy, Mottola has been given the position outright. He is expected to have a bright future and was honoured by the Blue Jays following the 2012 season with the Bobby Mattick Award for excellence in player development.
Pete Walker – Walker is another coach who makes a shift in the system as he moves from bullpen coach to his new position as pitching coach. A former pitcher he spent parts of eight seasons in the Major Leagues including two stints with the Blue Jays, compiling a 19-14 record with a 4.32 ERA. Walker played for the Blue Jays during Gibbons first tenure as manager and is taking over for former pitching coach Bruce Walton.
Vacant – This position is expected to be filled very soon, Pat Hengten is rumoured to be the lead candidate.
