Echoes From 527: Hech’d

Following a gut wrenching 15 inning loss to Oakland that saw both Colby Rasmus and Brett Lawrie exit with injuries, the Blue Jays made a series of moves optioning Brett Cecil to AAA Vegas, designating  Drew Carpenter for assignment & selecting the contract of both Jesse Chavez & Adeiny Hechavarria.

In 9 appearances since being recalled, Cecil recorded 6 Quality Starts while winning a pair of games and tallying a 5.17 ERA. As a team, the Blue Jays were averaging 4.76 Runs per start when Cecil took the mound  however only 8 Runs were plated in his past 4 starts resulting in the team dropping all 4 decisions. With Cecil out of the picture, JA Happ will move from the pen to the rotation.

Carpenter is the victim of circumstances as the Jays were forced to make room for Hechavarria  following Lawrie’s departure on Friday night. In 9 innings with Toronto, Carp allowed 7 hits and 5 Earned Runs while punching out 9.

As for Chavez, the 28 year old RHP provides the Jays with another option for long relief out of the pen. Despite holding the best overall pitching record for the 64-49 51′s, Chavez has struggled at the MLB level allowing 24 Hits in 20.1 Innings Pitched collecting a 8.85 ERA in 8 games with Toronto.

Hechavarria will make his big league debut Saturday as the team looks snap a 6 game skid with a win over Oakland. In 102 games with AAA Vegas, Hech compiled a .312/.363/.424 line while collecting 138 hits (32 for extra bases) and stealing 8 bags in 10 chances.

Don’t let the .961 FLD % fool you, the 23 year old Cuban native is thought to have the best range (at shortstop) in professional baseball and his 18 Errors on the season are a product of both his range and the rock hard field conditions in the PCL.

For the time being, Hechavarria will man the hot corner for the Jays while Brett Lawrie will likely be out of the line up as he looks to properly heal a reoccurring rib injury suffered while falling into a camera bay vs New York.

Like Gose and Sierra, Hechavarria is far from being polished with the stick however he should provide an interesting focal point as the team heads in to the final couple of months in the season.
