The starting rotation has been a hot topic for Toronto thus far and a few individual performances stood out this past week.
This weeks Blue Jay of the Week is…. Henderson Alvarez! (@H_Alvarez_37)
Brandon Morrow and Henderson Alvarez dominated the LA Angels with back-to-back complete game shutouts, giving up 3 and 6 hits respectively. As impressive as those starts were the teams 22 yr old starter followed that up with another solid outing which is why he is the Blue Jay of the Week!
Alvarez doesn’t accumulate a lot of strike outs which is evident as he only has 5 in his last two starts. He relies heavily on both his 4-seam and 2-seam fastballs, the 2-seamer creates a lot of swing and misses while his nasty slider produces a lot of ground balls.
The Angels and Twins were both victims this week and if the rotation keeps steady he will face the Rays and Mets in his next 2 starts.
In retrospect this was a very promising week for the young Venezuelan because he only has 17 Major League starts under his belt and the complete game and shut out were both the first of his career.
If Henderson Alvarez can continue pitching the way he has fans will continue to get behind him and I won’t have any choice but to once again name him the Blue Jay of the Week!
