My Blue Jay of the Week is based on one game but thankfully that game lasted 16 innings! With a game that long lots of players had a chance to make an impact, so who stepped up in Cleveland?
This weeks Blue Jay of the Week is…. JP Arencibia! (@jparencibia9)
I can pretty much guarantee you this will be the only time all year that my Blue Jay of the Week only records one hit during the week.
It will also be the only time that the player strikes out more times than he has hits but JP Arencibia’s 3-run home run in the top of the 15th inning was the game-winning blast for the Blue Jays. The game turned into a marathon after Indians starter Justin Masterson tamed the Blue Jays through 8 innings of 2-hit baseball.
JPA did much more than record his lone hit, he also locked down the backstop position by blocking a countless number of breaking balls in the dirt. Add to that a stellar defensive play on a pitch that bounced a few feet towards first base which caused Shin-Soo Choo to try and score from 3rd base. Arencibia pounced on the loose ball, ignored Ricky Romero who was running to cover home plate and dove back to a sliding Choo to make the tag on the foot and record the 3rd out of the inning.
JP has shown a maturity that continues to grow behind the plate and he proved last year that he swings a heavy bat.
Word in the off-season was that JPA didn’t feel he received enough recognition for his very solid rookie campaign but I don’t think he’ll have to worry about people taking notice anymore. Not because he’s my Blue Jay of the Week but because this was just the first of many games where he’ll be making the difference when all is said and done.
