J.P. Arencibia and Canadian Brett Lawrie were named to the 2011 Topps All-Star Rookie Team this past Wednesday morning.
Lawrie finished the year with a strong .293 avg along with 9 home runs and 25 RBI’s while Arencibia finished with a .219 avg and 23 home runs, a Blue Jays record for catchers.
The Major League Rookie All-Star Team is one of a number of awards programs managed by Topps to reward and encourage young ballplayers. Since 1959, Topps has annually bestowed honours on Minor Leaguers, baseball scouts and the Baseball Organization of the Year.
The Topps Company was founded in 1938 as Topps Chewing Gum, and in 1950, it added trading cards to its product line. Baseball cards appeared in 1951 and quickly became a vital part of pop culture, a tradition that continues to this day.
